Childhood Obesity

A large number of children and teenagers in the United States are obese, and their numbers are on the rise. It is true that not all obese infants become obese children, and not all obese children grow up to become obese adults. Still, it is more likely that obesity beginning even in early childhood will persist through the entire life span.

A child has to face numerous problems on account of obesity. In addition to increasing the risk of obesity in adulthood, childhood obesity may cause pediatric hypertension, is linked with type 2 diabetes mellitus, increases the risk of coronary heart disease, and increases stress on the weight-bearing joints. On the psychological side, it lowers a child's self-esteem, and affects his/her relationships with peers. There are reasons to believe that social and psychological problems are the most significant consequences of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is most likely caused by an interaction of nutritional, psychological, familial, and physiological factors.

The risk of obesity is greatest among children who have two obese parents caused likely by strong genetic factors.

Instead of focusing on weight loss, childhood obesity treatment programs aim to slow or halt weight gain so the child will grow into his or her body weight over a period of months to years. Physical exercise is a successful strategy for weight loss for children unless coupled with another intervention, such as nutrition education or behavior modification. Without imposing too much caloric restrictions, it is better to go for balanced diets with moderate caloric restriction, especially low dietary fat.

As preventive measures, education for the child should include proper nutrition, selection of low-fat snacks, healthy exercise habits, and monitoring of television viewing. In addition, parent education may focus on building self-esteem and address psychological problems.

Gastric Bypass: The Choice Is Yours?

Not everyone that is overweight should have gastric bypass surgery to help them lose weight. In many cases, this is simply not the right choice because of the health risks and the condition that some individuals are in. For those that this is the right choice for, though, there are many more things to think about besides the fact that you should lose weight with gastric bypass help.

In order for you to make the right decision for you, there are several steps that you should go through. Taking the time to go through them honestly with yourself will help you to get a better grasp on what lies ahead for you.

The first thing that you should understand and do is to find out if you are a candidate for gastric bypass at all. To do this, you will need to talk to your health care provider. They will talk to you about several things.

· Most will want you to try to lose weight for six months time naturally, telling you that you need to lose a certain percentage prior to being able to have consideration for the surgery in order to lower your risks.

· In most cases, health care providers will require that you be a certain percentage over your ideal body weight. Even if you are slightly below, they are likely to reject you for gastric bypass because the risks are not outweighed by the need.

· They will also inform you of the coverage of your insurance. Some insurance companies only cover this surgery if it is life threatening not to have it.

Once you have found out if you qualify for gastric bypass from your doctor, you need to still make some significant decisions. Choosing the right ones here will provide you with the best decision for your own well being.

The first step is emotional. You need to seek out counseling. In most cases, your health care provider will require this anyway. The task is to determine why you are overweight. For some, it is hereditary or otherwise out of their control. But, for the most, it is the fact that they are emotional eaters or stress eaters. Solving these emotional traumas can help to improve your chances of success in gastric bypass.

Then, you need to take a hard look at your physical consideration. While you may be thinking that this is the best way for you to improve your health, there are many risks that can go along with it. Your body is taxed from the surgery and the increase shock to a body that is already working hard is high. You will also need to cope with the fact that sometimes it doesn't work as well as you would hope either. You will need to talk to your doctor at length about the ability that your body has to get through the surgery and to recover effectively.

But, this is not all. You still need to do some serious soul searching. Although you may think that this is going to be a great thing for you, the fact is that it will be heart wrenching, painful and emotionally devastating. You will find yourself asking questions such as these:

· Why didn't people like me when I was overweight?

· Why wasn't I good enough then?

· I'm the same person, but now they think I'm beautiful. Before I wasn't.

These are very difficult and traumatic things to think about, but many patients of gastric bypass will need to seek additional counseling after their surgery to help them through it. Beforehand, though, you need to figure out if you can actually handle the pain and worry that is likely to follow the surgery. It is no small task to deal with.

Gastric bypass allows for individuals to receive some amazing benefits. Losing the weight that the body has carried around for so long will help individuals to feel better and to do more. Their heart and other organs can get back to working at a normal level as opposed to the higher levels that have been happening. This can prolong their expectancy. And, you can live better, do more and feel good with yourself.

Prior preparation for your gastric bypass will leave you open and raw emotionally. It will take time to work through the questions and concerns that you will have. And, it will be difficult to realize the why's of this situation. Yet, when you do work through these things and find that gastric bypass is the right choice for you, you will greatly benefit from it. The key is to work through everything and to know what to expect. Gastric bypass will then be successful both physically and emotionally.

Weight Loss Made Easy

Weight loss doesn't need to be this complicated!

There are low fat, low carb, low calorie, and even liquid diets. There are dozens of pills and plans promising the world with quick weight loss. I am sure, while you're reading this article, someone is dreaming up another "quick fix" solution to the ever growing obesity epidemic.

I would like to tell you an eye opening weight loss related story about Jill, a person I consulted with.

Jill, a 35 year old single women in Los Angeles, had a first date last Saturday night with whom she called "Mr. Perfect." Because the dinner date was at 8:00 pm, she told her girlfriends she needed to start getting ready at 6:00 pm. Jill wanted to look the best she could, therefore, her outfit and accessories were planned days in advance. She picked out a dress she wore only once, last year, which generated rave reviews.

As Jill anxiously dressed for her big night with "Mr. Perfect," she shockingly couldn't squeeze into her tight dress. Instant panic! It didn't fit, and her night was ruined. She felt fat, unattractive, and downright disgusted with herself. Jill told me she wanted to cancel the date and hide. Does any of this sound familiar?

I am sharing this story with you because this is exactly how the weight loss, diet roller coaster can begin.

After feeling horrible about herself, a distraught Jill frantically began searching for the quickest weight loss solution possible. Jill said "whatever it takes, I need this off now!"

The next day Jill was bombarded with dozens of different complicated, and confusing solutions. Pills, exercise, low carb, liquid, South Beach, Beverly Hills, and the Grapefruit Diet. She called me, in an extremely emotional state, to ask which diet was best.

After carefully explaining that weight loss can be very easy as long as she stepped back and understood and followed a basic, rational system I began to share with her.

It is time to stop making weight loss so complicated! It can be extremely easy if you understand and follow the simple system I shared with Jill. The system, I am referring to, has been outlined below for your benefit also.

1. Determine your maintenance calories by writing down every thing you eat for 7 days. This includes even the little piece of cheese or chocolate, or the sugar and cream you might have put into your coffee. Make sure you don't alter your diet in any way throughout these 7 days. This is considered your typical 7 day diet recall.

2. Use a calorie counting book and account for each and every calorie you took in. Figure out the calorie content at the end of each day.

3. Add up the calories for all 7 days to get the grand total.

4. Take the grand total and divide by 7. This will equal your daily maintenance calories - the amount of calories required to maintain your present bodyweight. (You have to assume you neither gained nor lost weight while recording these numbers.) This method will take into account individual metabolism, and physical activity levels.

5. To lose 1 pound of fat per week, you must find a way to decrease your caloric intake by 500 calories per day for seven straight days. Consistency does count. If you wish to increase your physical activity by 250 more calories per day, all you need to do is cut 250 calories each day from your maintenance number identified above.

Take a close look at your 7 day recall, and determine which foods you can either cut down on, or eliminate. Look at portion size, high fat foods, sugar based beverages, and desserts.

Once again, there must be consistent, day after day, effort in order to lose weight. There are no quick, secret magic pills.

Follow these simple steps, and you will lose body fat when ever you want. There will never be a need again for the "quick fix" flavor of the month diet. Therefore, if you understand this simple principle, you will never be confused about what works and what doesn't , resulting in complete control over your weight. _______________________________________________________________

At the University of Illinois, a new research found that eating high quality protein such as protein found in eggs can help weight loss. An essential amino acid leucine reduces muscle tissue loss, promotes body fat loss and stabilizes blood glucose levels. Two groups of women aged 45 to 57 were put on a 1700 calorie weight loss diets. The first group ate high protein breakfast which had eggs, low fat diary products and lean meat. And the second group had high carbohydrate breakfast. Women who ate rich protein diet showed more weight loss than those on a rich carbohydrate meal. This research finding will help people who are battling with obesity, type2 diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases.

Fighting the calories is by no means an easy task. I know how it feels to not fit into my clothes after a holiday or a week of letting go! Then comes the arduous task of slimming down again, trying to find a diet to work around your hectic daily routine. This alone is no easy task. Committing yourself to a diet takes a lot of effort, you can't expect to loose weight by taking some diet pill and sitting on the sofa eating the wrong food and having no exercise.

Fat Lady in a Thin Body: WLS Patients Feel Like Imposters

Every weight loss surgery patient I've met said they at sometime during the weight loss experience felt like a fraud. A fraud is someone who pretends to be what they are not, an imposter. Given this definition, of course we feel like a fraud! Almost overnight we become the exact opposite of what we have been for many years. We are in fact a fat person masquerading in a thin body. Of course we feel like a fraud!

Weight loss following gastric bypass is so fast and consistent; there is no time to pause and become familiar with ourselves as our size diminishes and our health improves. So, while the body adjusts to its new healthy weight, our mind is slow to catch up. It still sees a fat person and this smaller body is alien and unknown. It is an imposter. A disguise. A fraud.

Be assured, this phase of fraud is normal and consistent among people experiencing rapid massive weight loss, it is part of the transformation. Be comforted knowing feelings of fraud will pass. As we become familiar with our down-sized dimensions the haunts from our morbidly obese days will pass. If a bariatric patient after several years of successful weight maintenance rapidly regained the weight they would feel as much a fraud in their new super-sized body as they did in their newly trimmed body. Feelings of fraud are certain to result when a change is as rapid and effective as gastric bypass weight loss.

For many patients, a different feeling of fraud is manifest when others start to notice and comment about the weight loss. In addition to managing our own feelings of change, we must manage feedback from others, much of which is unsolicited. Patients who have kept their surgery private feel fraudulent when they answer "I'm losing weight by eating less, controlling my sugar and fat intake and exercising" all of which is true. Patients who speak openly about their weight loss surgery may be told surgery was easy way out of obesity. They may hear about surgeries gone bad, get the warnings about regaining the weight, and be treated to a host of other myths. This feedback can cause us to feel fraudulent.

One weight loss patient said it best: "what I find both interesting and sad about bariatric patients: we are ashamed when we are fat, and we are ashamed when we do something about it." It is not fraudulent to be medically treated for a disease that is killing you. The weight loss surgery patient who accepts this as fact successfully overcomes feeling like a fraud. That patient celebrates the miracle of modern medicine and a second chance at living.

I used to tell my husband, "I'm nothing but a fat lady masquerading in small clothes." He didn't like me to talk that way about myself and asked, "if your best friend succeeded at losing weight

At What Point Does Obesity Become Life-Threatening?

Obesity is typically measured in terms of a person's body mass index (BMI) which is found by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing this by the square of your height in meters. An individual with a BMI in excess of 30 is considered to be obese and a person with a BMI of more than 40 is said to be severely or morbidly obese. In other words, a 1.6 meter tall man weighing 115 kilograms would have a BMI of 45 and would be morbidly, or life-threateningly, obese.

This however is a somewhat simplistic view of morbid obesity as it is possible for an individual to be suffering from life-threatening obesity with a BMI below, and in some cases well below, 40. So we need to find a better definition.

Obesity can be considered life-threatening when your weight causes health problems which are a direct result of your being overweight and where such health problems are likely to lead to a marked deterioration in your general health, shorten your life expectancy and severely affect your lifestyle. Such health conditions are referred to as co-morbidities and are many and varied. Some of the more commonly seen co-morbidities include:

<li><b>Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD).</b> ASCVD is a condition in which fat is deposited within the walls of the blood vessels and can lead to coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Commonly referred to as "hardening of the arteries" this represents a major cause of death in the United States today.

<li><b>Type 2 (or Adult-Onset) Diabetes.</b> Type 2 diabetes is seen normally in middle aged and elderly patients and, if you are excessively overweight, you increase your chances of contracting type 2 diabetes forty fold. Type 2 diabetes is again a leading cause of death in the United States.</li>

<li><b>High Blood Pressure.</b> High blood pressure, or hypertension, is very common in obese individuals and can lead to the early development of cardiovascular disease, as well as to kidney disease.</li>

<li><b>Obstructive Sleep Apnea.</b> As the muscles relax during sleep the weight of the excess tissue around the throat in obese individuals collapses the throat passage and breathing stops. The body reacts by "jolting" you into breathing again but, as time goes by and weight continues to increase there is a growing incidence of death resulting from sleep apnea.</li>

<li><b>Liver Disease.</b> Fat deposited in the tissue of the liver can lead to chronic inflammation of the liver, cirrhosis and, eventually, to liver failure.</li>

<li><b>Gall-Bladder Disease.</b> Gallstones (frequently composed of crystallized cholesterol) can lead to obstruction of the ducts from the liver, jaundice and inflammation of the pancreas.</li>

In this short article it is only possible to list some of the conditions commonly seen as a result of obesity and this list should not be taken as exhaustive. In cases however where these conditions, and others, are present morbid obesity surgery will often be considered.

Weight loss surgery has been around for many years now and advances in technology, improved surgical techniques and simple experience have led to the development of several surgical techniques which are now considered to be relatively low risk and which display fewer complications that earlier forms of surgery.
